Day 4 – A Song That Makes You Sad

A few contenders for this one: Paul Kelly’s “How To Make Gravy”, while it often makes me cry, doesn’t really make me sad, and J Dilla’s “Don’t Cry” is moving but uplifting. Xiu Xiu’s “Clowne Towne” and Radiohead’s “No Surprises” both make me feel intensely depressed, which is different again. Tom Waits’ “Cold Cold Ground” contains the saddest couplet I know of (“The piano is firewood / Times Square is a dream”) yet is somehow less moving as a whole. But the Triffids’ “Wide Open Road” hits a streak of nostalgia, sorrow and regret in me, without fail, every time.
