I’d never heard of Dorothy Baker until yatima blogged about Cassandra a while ago, although I had heard of her earlier book Young Man With a Horn. Then C borrowed it from the library and started raving about it as well, so I read her copy after she was finished. It really is that good: the way Baker renders the voices of the twin sisters is a bit of a miracle. It’s quite heartbreaking but there are moments of lovely music- and alcoholism-related comedy. I don’t think we’re ever going to call vodka vodka again.
