T H v Patrick White

Inspired by yatima’s mashup of E B and T H White, here is The Candle in the Wind by Patrick White:

The castle was dark and cold, and the shadows lurking in the beams overhead. There was a sound of cannon, that could have almost been thunder. But the young man still waited in attendance upon the king. He had been a soldier in the wars, and talked of the heroism of his father’s men, and of the glory of England, so that the old king was most displeased, and spat with force onto the rough stone floor.

The young man asked Arthur Pendragon, “But perhaps you think we fight, rather, for the glory of God?”

The old king pointed at the gob of spittle, that showed moist and gleaming on the flags.

“That is God,” he said.
