Mazda crushes a boatload of new cars.

There’s something disturbing about this story, and it isn’t only the wastefulness, which really just means that Mazda’s brand (in some sense) is worth more to the company than a shipload of vehicles.

What’s I found really creepy is the part where they grind the alloy wheels into pieces. Wrecking the cars is not enough: they must be ritualistically dismembered, almost desecrated, as all economic value is removed from the non-salvageable components.

I wonder if stories like this will be told in first year economics courses next century, when peak oil may have tipped values back to the physical, and how the kids will react to them.
