Ornette Coleman

Opera House, 24th February

All of these people were walking back from seeing the Queen Victoria and QE2 as me and my brother were walking up to the Opera House to see Ornette Coleman. The QE2 is just coming around Bennelong Point in the photo.

The show was great. He was accompanied by his current quartet, his son Denardo on drums and three bassists: electric, piccolo electric and upright acoustic. The upright player spent a lot of time bowing in the upper register – some of the loveliest moments were when he and Ornette started interweaving and throwing lines back and forth.

I was really tired, having helped my dad hang a gate and pour some concrete in the afternoon, but being exhausted provided a nice mental space in which to listen.
