Eleven years of progress

I’m not being sarcastic. It was pretty stagnant, but not entirely so, and it’s always two steps forward, one step back. Here are a few of the left achievements of the Howard years.

Universal healthcare now has bipartisan support in Australia.

We won the debate on global warming.

It hasn’t quite sunk in yet, but we won the debate on multiculturalism, too. Somehow I don’t think the Libs will try race-baiting at the next election; I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that Howard lost the first election to be held after the Cronulla riots.

If you believe their own people, the Libs are now in a complete mess; it seems peculiar to me that they have gone from being an astonishingly successful government to a fractured ruin of an Opposition in the blink of an eye, but who am I to complain about that.
